Jill Scott was born on April 4 1972 on the 4th of April 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Scott was raised by her grandmother as an all-only daughter of her grandmother. Scott was a student at an institution called the Philadelphia High School for Girls as well as Temple University after graduating. In addition to working two job opportunities, Scott also studied secondary teaching at Temple University. She hoped to become a teacher of English at a secondary school. However, she was not able to achieve this dream when, after completing three years of study and becoming a teaching assistant, she left college. The path she took to her career started with a performance artist who spoke words and performing live at poetry readings. Then she teamed up to Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. Through a Roots performance, she declared herself as an artist. After that, she got collaborations including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She gained performance experience during the Canada tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was also the first signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
